Two new businesses are opening on Mackinac Island’s Main Street this May owned by husband and wife team Nicole and Andrew Doud. Here’s a look inside!

Canvas & Paddle, opening May 5
Nicole Doud is heading up this new venture. The shop will carry a mix of apparel and gifts that reflect what you would wear or use Up North—whether that’s Wisconsin, Minnesota or Northern Michigan. “Wherever your happy place is, that’s Up North. It’s a place that helps you escape from the craziness of everyday life,” Nicole says.

Canvas & Paddle (102 N. Main St.) is located next door to Nicole’s first business, Little Luxuries, within Lilac Tree Hotel. The 650-square-foot shop will have a rustic, small cabin feeling. Nicole plans to carry products from less than 15 vendors compared to over 100 retailers featured at both Little Luxuries and it’s sister shop, Little Luxuries Artists Market.

Canvas & Paddle’s vendor partners currently include Peninsulas, Stormy Kromer, Roo Kee Roo, All Things Grow and Faribault Woolen Mill Co. Peninsulas is creating custom, exclusive products for Canvas & Paddle. About half of the store will be dedicated to their products including apparel, decals, glassware, journals and more.

The shop will also feature photos by Sara Wright, a Mackinac Island and Northern Michigan photographer (It’s Wonderful Photography). Here a few shots we love by Sara.

Doud’s Market & Deli, opening around May 5
Andrew Doud is the fourth-generation owner of Doud’s Market, which is expanding to include a second shop, Doud’s Market & Deli, near Shepler’s Dock. Designed to be a grab-and-go lunch spot, Doud’s Market & Deli will carry quick meal options such as sandwiches, pizza, salads and baked goods along with beer, wine and other beverages. (It will be a perfect stop before a lakeside picnic!) The new deli is located at 7395 Main St., previously Martha’s Sweet Shop.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the renovations.
