CHARLEVOIX: Fall is in the air and Northern Michigan orchards are busy harvesting bushels of fresh, ripe apples in preparation for the 38th Annual Apple Fest taking place downtown Charlevoix October 14-16. On Friday and Saturday the hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Apples are Michigan’s largest and most valuable fruit crop and this year our apple trees are filled to overflowing.

Area orchards will be set up downtown in East Park with more than 30 types of apples and a variety of fall harvest items and apple-related goods. Local non-profit organizations will be on site to tempt you with delicious, hot food such as chili, hot dogs, apple flappens (a traditional Dutch specialty), Irish apple cake and kielbasa. The special Fall Market is the perfect place to pick up your fresh bagels, mustard, honey, meat, baked goods, granola, soup, maple syrup, cider, mums, pies, jam and fall veggies—all locally grown and produced.

And don’t forget to stop by the Apple Fest booth on Bridge Street next to the clock tower to purchase your 2016 commemorative Apple Fest shirt! All proceeds from shirt sales benefit the Charlevoix High School Art Department.

Our fall harvest celebration includes fun for the entire family. You won’t want to miss the expanded Art & Craft Show taking place all three days. More than 125 artist booths will be located in East Park. Head one block north to Bridge Park to check out an additional 40+ booths. In total, there are over 165 exhibitor booths bursting with unique, one-of-a-kind creations. The show offers the work of artists and craftsmen from around the country and is the perfect venue to kick off the holiday shopping season, so be sure to check out both locations!

New this year, children can ride and play with the interactive trains provided by Castle Farms. The train area will be located in East Park in and around the Odmark Pavilion. Trains will be running on all three days of the festival (weather permitting).

The children’s area will be located on Mason Street on Saturday and Sunday only. Bring the family for a variety of child-friendly activities including a petting farm, real live camel, face painting, Twister Joe Balloon Artist and more.

Put on your dancing shoes because there will be dancing in the street Saturday afternoon! The Pine River Jazz Band will perform a free swing-dance concert from 3 to 5 p.m. on the east end of Mason Street.

The Kiwanis Apple Fest Family Fun Run is on tap for Saturday morning. The 1-mile starts at 9 a.m.; 5K starts at 9:30 a.m. This is a true fun run designed for all ages and with fun obstacles along the way. Goodies will be given away to all participants and some great local treats will be available to all at the finish line, so visit the website and register early.

Experience the magic of autumn in Northern Michigan at the 38th Annual Charlevoix Apple Fest. Join the festivities and show your support for our local farmers, orchards and non-profit organizations while celebrating the season in scenic downtown Charlevoix this October. The harvest is in!
