A new food experience is expanding beyond Northern Michigan. 10 Cents a Meal is the most recent development in Groundwork Center’s Farm-to-School program. The initiative creates a matching fund so that schools and farmers can work together to put fresh, local fruits and vegetables on students’ plates.

Many regional foundations and businesses helped to fund the original pilot program, but now the state government is getting into the local food game by setting up grants for schools in 13 counties statewide. The ultimate goal of 10 Cents a Meal is to see local produce in every cafeteria in Michigan.

MyNorth Media’s Summer 2016 video intern, Emma Winowiecki, explores the positive impact of this program on Northern Michigan kids with this MyNorth Media video.
