The 2015 Northern Home & Cottage Home Tour takes place on Saturday, September 19 from 10 am to 5 pm. The tour treats tourgoers to 12 homes, each chosen for their distinctive style and/or innovative lifestyle concept. Proceeds raised during the home tour will benefit Northern Michigan non-profit, Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan. If you’ve ever thought of downsizing (or if you simply love perfectly designed smallish homes!) this home is a must—see. Gary and Nancy Nealis had been living in a much larger house when they decided to simplify their lives by building this 1,800-square-foot home. The clincher? They didn’t want to sacrifice amenities. And a couple of other caveats: their pretty little lot on Old Mission Peninsula with its view of East Grand Traverse Bay was narrow and considered hard to build on. And to boot, the Nealises, who began the project just last winter, wanted to be in their new home by June 2015.
Enter the super-efficient team of architect Robert Holdeman, builder Brian Mohr of Calybr Homes, and Cedar Creek Interiors. The finished product shines like a precious little gem. An open floor plan with a three-season porch and view of the bay, wraps around a courtyard that holds a just-the-right-sized swimming pool—a pool that also has a view of the bay. But the real proof that fine living can come with a diminutive floor plan is a bay window set off the living area with a view of the pool—a nook that offers just enough room for a baby grand piano.
