Suttons Bay boasts a new eatery, just remodeled and opened this November. Jeff Davies, the owner and exec chef, plans to offer food and beverages from lunch to late. How late? Streetside Grille may be the only restaurant in Leelanau County committed to serving food after 10 pm, planning to keep the kitchen open until midnight.

The bar has been expanded to fill one side of the restaurant, perhaps in anticipation of that late dining crowd. The other side of the restaurant is filled with tables and bench seating in front of a large windowed garage door facing the street, making us dream of warm Northern Michigan summer days and Suttons Bay breezes.

Until then, the fare, prepared by chef David Lopez, will keep one warm. The menu is well rounded with small plates, salads, burgers and flatbread pizzas. Appetizers are $10 – $12. Dinner salads are $12. Entrees lean towards fish and chicken with one porterhouse steak, and there are several items at $14, ranging to $24 for the steak.

The sliders, three for $9, are worth special mention. Served in threes, diners can choose from several interesting slider preparations including an oyster po boy and a French dip of roasted prime rib. Also available are sandwiches including a French dip sandwich of that same great prime rib and melted swiss, and a rosemary and white wine marinated chicken with lettuce, tomato and honey mustard.

These folks do lobster well. The lobster bisque, on special the night we were there, is chunky and flavorful. Rich enough for a cup to be filling, but you’ll want a whole bowl. The lobster mac and cheese got pre-teen approval from our 11 year old. She couldn’t finish it all, which was okay, because the rest of the table all wanted more than a taste.

The staff explained that they plan to have a $7.00 sandwich and soup combo for lunch, although that lobster bisque merits an extra buck. Burgers start at $8.

It’s a familiar spot right on M-22 just after the blinking traffic light at the south end of Suttons Bay. The location has been the site of several eateries over the years: Hattie’s, Samuel’s, Gusto, Stoney Point Grill. The new decor is a crisp medley of amber-stained planks, galvanized steel and cream plaster. Lots of soft spot lighting gives the place an urban moody feel.
