The Northwest Michigan Garlic Show and Auction takes place on October 18, 2014 at Maple Bay Farm (5 miles south of Elk Rapids on US 31) from 3-7:30 pm.

Lovers of garlic—growers and eaters alike: Are you interested in culinary varieties of garlic? Looking for great seed garlic for your garden? Hankering to experience a real, live auction? Support the ISLAND Farmer Residency Program by entering your garlic in the first annual Northwest Michigan Garlic Show & Auction.

Garlic growers who grow without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers within the 10-county area will be grappling for the coveted Best of Show award. The garlic heads submitted will be auctioned off by auctioneer Loren Heller, so bring your game and your garlic breath and go home with some of the best garlic in Northern Lower Michigan. Garlic will be evaluated on the basis of size and appearance, flavor, variety characteristics, and consistency.

Our distinguished panel of judges include:

  • Eric Patterson, chef, The Cook’s House
  • Jim Sluyter, local farming and food systems veteran
  • Evan Smith, Cherry Capital Foods
  • Kate Pearson, Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Best of Show entries will be awarded a portion of the sales from their garlic. Remaining proceeds go to support the ISLAND Farmer Residency Program.

Food from The Cordwood Barbecue will be available for purchase. Cash bar, with beer from Short’s Brewing Company and local wines.

The fun begins at 3:00, followed by judging at 4:00 and auction at 5:30. Want to enter YOUR garlic? All you need to do is register! Click on this link and fill out the form. The registration form contains all you need to know to submit your entry.
