The seventh stop on the 2014 Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour is located in Elk Rapids at 6949 Timberlake Drive. After years of living in this home without a functioning stove, when the opportunity arose for a remodel the stove was a big priority on the to do list.

Some years back, these homeowners purchased an older home on Birch Lake north of Elk Rapids for a vacation home. It had been used as a rental, and as rentals tend to go, this one had become a bit rundown, and soon after the couple moved in, the stove broke. Knowing that a kitchen remodel was somewhere in their future, the homeowners opted to work around the lack of a stove by using a microwave, waffle iron, electric skillet and other assorted appliances. It was particularly hard for one of the homeowners who especially loves to cook—big family-and-friend type dishes à la food diva Ina Garten’s (otherwise known as the Barefoot Contessa) turkey lasagna. Nearly a decade slipped by and finally the homeowners got around to remodeling. A project that eventually turned into a teardown and new-build.

The charming little mocha-colored contemporary cottage, designed by architect Sarah Bourgeois and built by Midlake Builders, is finished now. From her white-painted beadboard ceiling to her hand-scraped maple floors, she’s a sweetie. The kitchen sits at one end of a great room that looks out on Birch Lake. Designer Sandra Bargiel helped the owners strike just the right style note they were seeking—traditional and a bit sophisticated, yet warm and relaxed. The kitchen has simple, white shaker-style cabinetry from Showplace Cabinetry, a fabulous marble-topped oak island, dark granite counters and a tumbled marble backsplash that also features a set-in, antique cast iron fireback—traditionally used in the back of fireplaces to radiate heat outwards. The fireback sits above the stove—a shiny new Wolf range that the homeowner says was worth waiting for.
