Traverse City National Cherry Festival: The week of 2013 The National Cherry Festival is one of the busiest times of the year in Traverse City, so getting around town and finding parking can take more time than usual. There are so many fun events during the Festival that visitors definitely do not want to let finding parking get in the way of having some good old-fashioned, cherry-themed fun! So here are some helpful hints on parking and navigating the downtown Traverse City are during the week of the 2013 National Cherry Festival, June 29 to July 6.
There are several parking lots around the downtown Traverse City area. Most of the parking spots in the downtown area are metered and either have a two-hour or 10 hour maximum. The Larry C. Hardy Parking Deck (303 E State St.) and the Old Town Parking Deck (125 E Eighth St.) are some of the most affordable parking options in town. Both lots are $0.50 an hour and have a $5 maximum for the day until July 1, when rates increase to $1 an hour, maximum $10/day. All downtown lots are just a brief walk to the Festival’s Open Space and Midway. (And you get the added benefit of a shaded parking spot!)
Free Cherry Festival Shuttles in Traverse City
For those visitors who would like to avoid feeding the parking meter, there are free shuttles to help visitors of the festival and locals navigate Traverse City during the Cherry Fest.
Various free shuttles will run from different areas around town from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. The shuttles run from the Elm Parking Lot at Northwest Michigan College to Thirlby Field at 14th and Pine Streets, making several stops at various locations in the downtown Traverse City area. Shuttles run on the hour and some stops will be closed during parades and some other special Festival events.
