Traverse City Events: Artcenter At City Opera House This May

Traverse City Events: The Artcenter Traverse City is coming to City Opera House! For the month of May, the Towsley Lobby will be filled with the works of three talented artists. This triple threat is made up of Lisa Perrine Brown, Connie McKinney, and Charles Perry Jones. Come in anytime Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. throughout the month of May and check out the work of not one artist but three!

The mission of Artcenter Traverse City is to respond to and serve the community needs; expand opportunities for local artists both at home and in other markets; attract artists and visitors to our community; and enhance the cultural assets of the region with art through education, exposition, and displays of public art. They are an educational and charitable non-profit organization that has been serving artists, patrons and the region since it was founded in 1951. City Opera House is proud to be joining forces with them to put the work of three gifted artists on display for the month of May.

Lisa Perrine Brown is a Product Designer, Illustrator, Lecturer, and Fine Artist with a wide array of experiences. She has taught at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, College for Creative Studies in Detroit, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and Raffles Design International in Mumbai, India. Now she is going back to basics. Pre-college Lisa was trained at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia as a fine artist. She focused almost exclusively on figure related illustration and painting. Today, at forty-four, she is returning to old school methods of oil painting and portraits as she branches further into the world of being a fine artist. Lisa lives in Traverse City, and her company, Upcycled Objekt and fine art studio, operates out of Cogs Creek Gallery & Studio.

Connie McKinney is a visual storyteller, artistically and spiritually inspired by her early childhood in Whitehall and Elk Rapids, Michigan. Her current works in color charcoal pastels: “Fools In Love” and “In The Kings Higher Court,” reflect age-old questions and examinations of the heart: “If I kiss a frog, will he turn out to be my knight in tarnished armor?” Connie fancies fairytales, world myths, stories of creation, and Grimm warnings concerning matters of life and love. In her coloring book process style, she enjoys the freedom of getting messy, accepting happy accidents, and moving the charcoal around much like finger painting. Connie also makes hand-made cards and will be learning how to create stained glass art, which lends itself well to her current work style.

Charles Perry Jones has studied art at Savannah College of Art and Design, Wayne State University, and Central Michigan University. He also recently studied glass blowing at John Sullivan of Crofoot Studios. Not only did Charles teach art for forty-two years in both the Glen Lake and Traverse City Public School, he has also worked as a commercial artist with Brewer Associates in Detroit and is an accomplished cabinetmaker. Trained in fiber design, he is an award-winning exhibitor who is currently exploring a variety of media including oils, encaustics, and graphite. Charles’ work has been in public and private collections in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.

The opening reception for these three artists is on Friday, May 3rd from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will be in conjunction with the Downtown Art Walk hosted by the Downtown Traverse City Association and sponsored by ABC 29&8. The Downtown Art Walk is a local favorite event where the public is invited to enjoy an evening of art, refreshments, food and music on a self-guided tour throughout Downtown Traverse City where artists from the Grand Traverse region and beyond will be present to feature their works.

Each month, City Opera House puts a different artist on display.  They are selected by committee and are displayed at no charge. Interested artists should contact the Box Office for an application and details.  231.941.8082
