Traverse City Events: Presented by the 37th Annual North American Vasa, the Junior VASA returns to Traverse City on Saturday February 9, 2013 as a key part of the North American Vasa Festival of Races at Timber Ridge Resort, attracting skiers ages 3-15 in cross-country skiing events ranging from 1km to 3 km in length.
Registration for Junior Vasa Races is only $5, and is available online through the Vasa ski race at vasa.org. Race day registration is also available on race day at the Main lodge at Timber Ridge starting at 10:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. Parents should arrive with their kids “ski-ready” and should allow time to complete the registration and waiver form and pick up the skier race bib.
“Junior Vasa skiers will be the Vasa skiers of the future,” stated Lisa Taylor, Race Director of the North American Vasa. “Hopefully they’ll remember the fun they had on skis in this event, and continue the sport for their entire lives.” She added.
Vasa invites “grown-up” skiers and ski fans to come out to cheer the kids on with cowbells, a unique tradition in the world of Nordic skiing and downhill skiing. “We expect over 100 spectators to come with loud cowbells and create a raucous for the kids. It will be fun for everyone.” said Taylor.
The races begin at 12:30 pm with a 1 km Classic with two waves for children ages 5 & under and 6-7, followed by a 12:40 p.m. start for a 3km Freestyle with 3 waves for ages, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-15, then followed by a 12:50 p.m. start for a 3km Classic with waves for ages, 8-9, 10-11, and 12-15.
All Junior VASA skiers will receive a custom Vasa medal of accomplishment at the finish line of their event. The events will take place on the groomed trails at Timber Ridge RV and Recreation Resort in Traverse City, Michigan. The event is not timed, but a large clock will be running for those interested in their time.
This will be the seventh year that the VASA Board of Directors is pleased to present the Junior Vasa to northern Michigan’s beginner skiers at the pre-school, grade school, middle school or high school levels.
