Traverse City Events: NMC's Great Lakes Great Chefs Dinner

Traverse City Events: A Traverse City tradition continues on October 5 with the annual Great Lakes Great Chefs Dinner.  Hors d’oeuvres will be served at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m. at Lobdell’s, A Teaching Restaurant.  The dinner is a fundraiser for Northwestern Michigan College's Great Lakes Culinary Institute.

Hosted annually by Harlan “Pete” Peterson, chef and owner of the former Tapawingo Restaurant in Ellsworth, Michigan and current general manager of American Spoon Cafe in Petoskey, Great Lakes Great Chefs features local chefs and local food.

Attendees of Great Lakes Great Chefs have come to expect a high level of quality over the years, and this year’s dinner will be no exception.  Dinner will be prepared by Chris Dettmer, a native Michigander who has returned to his home state to serve as the culinary director of American Spoon in Petoskey.  Dettmer has worked at some of the finest restaurants in the country and has been the Chef de Cuisine at The Restaurant at Meadowood in Napa Valley, one of only nine restaurants in the nation to have earned the three star ranking from the Michelin Guide.  Dettmer has also won “Battle Oatmeal” on Food Network’s hit series “Iron Chef.”

Pram Acharya, owner of Esperance in Charlevoix, Michigan will be this year’s sommelier.  Esperance is noted for its fine wines and specialty foods. Hors d’oeuvres will be served in NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute room 112 with a video presentation with Hans Van Sumeren and Constanza Hazelwood about the unique and world renowned program.

Last year’s event was prepared by Chef-in-Residence Stuart Brioza and Pastry Chef Nicole Krasinski.  In 2000, Brioza became an executive chef right here in Northern Michigan at what he calls “the restaurant at the end of the world” – Tapawingo, and Krasinski joined him as the restaurant’s pastry chef.  Since last year’s Great Lakes Great Chefs Dinner, Brioza and Krasinski have opened a restaurant, State Bird Provisions, in San Francisco, and this month, Bon Appetit ranked it number one on their list of Top 10 America’s Best New Restaurants.

Tickets for the event are $200 and can be purchased online at nmc.edu/greatchefs or by calling (231) 995-1021. Seating is limited.

Details and a complete menu will be available online at nmc.edu/greatchefs.
