Northern Michigan Events:On June 23, 2012, a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the completion of the North Eastern State Trail, the newest addition to the Northern Trail network. Following the ceremony, the trail will be open to the public for year-round cycling, hiking, running, and riding.
The "NEST" will also be featured on the Michigander Bicycle tour; participants can ride the trail-a former railway and now a path of smooth, crushed limestone-all the way from Alpena to Cheboygan. During the Michigander, which offers six and seven day bike tour options, riders will cover 70 miles of new trail, taking in breathtaking Northern Michigan views as they pass through woods and wetlands throughout state parks, and along the shores of Mullet Lake and the Cheboygan River.
More information about the Michigander and registration information can be found at michigantrails.org/michigander-bicycle-tour.
Proceeds from the Michigander tour support MTGA, a non profit organization dedicated to developing non-motorized trails and greenways connecting tourism destinations in villages and cities throughout Michigan. MTGA works closely with the Connecting Michigan Trailways Vision and Action Plan as a guiding force. The Connecting Michigan Plan has brought hundreds of Michigan residents together to plan for a system of interconnected trails.
