Northern Michigan Kids: Have a blast with Fishing Camp! Fun trivia questions will have your family learning about the outdoors as they race around the board to be the first to catch a fish and make it back to camp. Fishing Camp is perfect for the whole family and will bring the outdoors and memories of summer fun to you all year long!
Created, designed and manufactured in Michigan and sprung from log cabin beginnings, Fishing Camp is a game where both children and adults can play and learn fun facts about fishing. Recommended for ages 4+, players answer trivia questions about fish and fishing as they race around the board to be the first to catch a fish and make it back to camp. (Note to Dads, Uncles and Grandpas: telling fishing stories will not help you win- though of course they are encouraged!)
The game is designed to grow with the player, starting at level one questions, which are primarily identification of fish and fishing tackle. As the players increase their fishing knowledge, they grow into the higher level questions, making Fishing Camp a fun and educational game for the whole family.
How it all Started:
Growing up, game-creator Tim Paczesny relished the summers he spent exploring Northern Michigan's great outdoors at his family's log cabin resort. By adulthood, he had become an avid outdoorsman wanting to pass along this knowledge he garnered from Northern Michigan's outdoor offerings to his kids. But he wanted to make it fun.
Tim came up with the idea of creating games that would be able to teach families about the outdoors through trivia questions and fun facts. He developed his Eastport-based company, Education Outdoors, with a mission to "bring families together to interact and learn about the outdoors.” Tim continues to spread his playful teachings with games like his newest creation, Fishing Camp.
How to Play Fishing Camp:
Each player rolls the dice and moves his or her boat that number of spaces forward on the board. If the boat stops on a green lily pad the die is passed to the next player, but if the boat stops on a yellow lily pad the player draws a Fishing Camp trivia card. If the player answers the question on the card correctly, he or she rolls again.
Half of the trivia cards in the deck feature images of types of fish on them. If a player draws a fish card and answers the question about the fish correctly, he or she keeps the card. A player may “catch” 5 fish per turn before having to throw one back. Also, some of the Fishing Camp trivia cards have a special GPS icon on them. If a player draws a GPS card and answers the question on the card correctly, he or she is allowed to take a shortcut to the docks.
Players have to try and avoid landing on a “Go To Shore Lunch Island” spot during their turn. If their boat does have to go to shore, the player reads a Fishing Camp fun fact for all to hear and then the turn ends. The first player to park their boat back at the docks with a fish on board is declared the winner of the game.
