Traverse City Events: Don't Miss the 2011 Cherry Festival!

The Cherry Festival is in full swing, so don’t miss out on great days at this great Traverse City summer festival! Here are just a few fun things to kick start the week, check out cherryfestival.org/events for many more events that are happening all over town!

July 5

9 a.m.-4 p.m. Heritage Day: Visit the Open Space and glance back in time at the Grand Traverse region’s heritage–includes Native American art and hand crafted items, as well as food. Pow Wow starts at noon!

11:15 a.m. Cherry Classic Film Series: Head to the State Theatre on Front Street for a free movie and escape the heat!

1 p.m. Kids’ Cherry Pie Eating Contest: How fast can you stuff your face?

July 6

9 a.m.-6 p.m. Million Dollar Hole-In-One Golf Contest: Head to Bay Meadows Golf Course for your chance to win one million dollars, just take your best shot at a hole in one!

10 a.m.- 12 p.m. Kids’ Bicycle Rodeo: For kids 5-10, bring a bike and helmet and pedal your way through a timed obstacle course at the Traverse City Civic Center!

6 p.m.-7p.m. Cherry Pit Spit Contest: Spit a pit at the Open Space at the Pit Spit Contest! Daily prizes will be awarded, and the finalists return Saturday, July 9th at 5:30 p.m. for the final round.

July 7

11 a.m.-3 p.m. The Air Dogs: The competition is here! Featuring nearly 100 competitors (dog-athletes) and their owners, the winner of the competition is the dog who can jump the farthest into the water! Located at the Open Space.

5:45 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Festival Bed Race: The annual bed race showcases crazy bed racers in a race to the finish line. Winners are awarded medals based up on costume, design and speed. Beds and participants must arrive at 5 p.m. Located on Front street between Park and Cass Streets.

July 8

9 a.m.- 12 p.m.: Cool off at the beach during the Kids’ Sand Sculpture Contest!

10 a.m.6:30 p.m. -10 p.m. Queen’s Coronation Ball and Royal Auction: Watch the queen be crowned at the Traverse City Opera House and meet the competitors! Featuring hors d’ouevres, a cash bar, and live music.

July 9

7:45 a.m.- Festival of Races: Thousands of runners participate every year in this great, energizing Cherry Festival event that begins at Eastern Elementary school and ends by the Bay in Downtown Traverse City. Join in the run!

2-4 p.m. Cherry Idol Finals: Listen to the finalists from throughout the Festival’s week long event and see who you think has the most talent! Taking place at the Open Space Main Stage.

10:30 p.m. Festival Fireworks Finale over the Bay: Celebrate another year of great Cherry festivities in Northern Michigan. Watch a fantastic fireworks show to close the week.
