Northern Michigan Events: Winter Wow!Fest this week in Traverse City

Northern Michigan Events: This year’s Cherry Capital Winter Wow!Fest runs Friday through Monday, February 18-21. in the Traverse City area, and features everything from food, drink, and live music to a cherry pit spitting competition, snow softball, snow sculptures, ice sculptures, and an ice-cream eating contest—just in case you thought cold comfort meant something else.

Events new to the festival this year include Friday’s “Wine and Wow” from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., where a $10 entry tickets gets you a first taste of wine (plus the glass) with additional tastes of wine, beer, vodka and food starting at $3. "Wine and Wow" will be under the heated tent at the festival’s new central location for 2011, which is along Grandview Parkway between Cass and Union Streets (aka the Farmers Market area). Other locations will include the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa, Mt. Holiday Ski Area and the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.

Another addition for this year is the EpicHappens Downtown Throwdown Rail Jam snowboarding competition on Saturday, in downtown Traverse City, headlined with an appearance by Olympic medalist Danny Kass. Snowboarder Kass appears with his sidekick, the Dingo, fresh from their eponymous Fuel TV show "Adventures of Danny and The Dingo."

For the less extreme among us, a winter snow park with snow tubing hill—complete with bunny slope—is presented by Shanty Creek.
