On Thursday May 21, 2009, the City Opera House will host the Write Bloody Poetry Olympics, a Show Down. The poetry competition will have Team Chicago, Team Michigan and Team USA battle head to head to see who is the best live spoken word performer. The prize is $573 to the winner. The poets will have background music accompaniment from local resident Sarah Paquet, who is now attending University of Michigan. “Best of the West” musician Jay Buchanan will be opening and playing throughout the show. Jay has received comparisons to the musical genius of Jeff Buckley. Playing from door opening (7pm) until event start time of 8pm is the local band Fundubmentals.
The event will be hosted by former paratrooper, fired weatherman and poet Derrick Brown and Baz. Write Bloody Publishing is the next big indie publisher according to Venus Magazine and was founded by Derrick Brown in 2004. The company publishes and promotes books of fiction, poetry and art. The company is slated to release 12 books this year and recently published “Scandalabra” by Derrick Brown and “The Good Things About America” a compilation of poetry from the Write Bloody authors.
The Write Bloody Poetry Olympics features some of the best live spoken word performers today. Poets Buddy Wakefield (who has opened for Ani DiFranco), Anis Mojgani, Sarah Morgan and Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz are slated to appear. Events will include word stunt challenges, an audience obstacle course and audience participation. A night of poetry, music and comedy, like the Traverse City area has never seen, will occur one night only at the City Opera House.
Derrick Brown recently performed a workshop for Interlochen Academy of Arts Creative Writing students. He also will be hosting and performing for the Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals on May 20th, 2009 at Red Ginger. The Red Ginger event is an RSVP to Beth Milligan, who coordinates the Young Professionals events. The Young Professionals Book Club has chosen “Scandalabra” for its May selection.
A dance party will immediately follow the Olympics. The dance party will be hosted by DJ Tanner. The audience and authors/performers will have a chance to dance, talk and have fun.
Write Bloody Poetry Olympics happens Thursday, May 21, at 8:00 PM. General admission is $15 and student admission is $10. For more information contact City Opera House, 106 E. Front St., Traverse City, Michigan, 49684. 231-941-8082.
