Weekend Reverie

The Hexagon House

Imagine

In Victorian times, people believe the six-sided shape of the hexagon suggested serenity. A weekend spent in this architectural inspiration proves them right. Historical house buffs will love the two levels of wraparound porches, the lighthouse cupola at center, library under the stairs and the countless original fixtures and furnishings leftover from its days as a lumbermen’s boarding house in the late 1800’s. Anyone will love the three-acre garden setting in the boutique-filled harbor town of Pentwater.

Indulge

Every room in the house is exceptional in style, charm and coziness yet big enough to accommodate an in-room massage therapist and table. None are without a private bath, grand view or private porch access. Guests in the Cottage Rose Suite can consider themselves the luckiest. A window seat, Jacuzzi bath and king-size bed are here, the latter your ticket to the B&B’s Champagne Breakfast in Bed package, which serves the innkeeper’s already amazing morning meal on fine china with a fresh flower and a bottle of fine bubbly at the time you request.

Little Presque Isle Rustic Cabins

Imagine

On Harlow Lake, a quiet water just a stone’s throw from Marquette, you’ll find seclusion and solitude in your very own lakeside log cabin. Just four other cabins share the shoreline here—with plenty of birch and pine woodland between for privacy. Inside your neat-as-a-pin cabin, you’ll find a table and benches, a woodstove and six bunks. Bring cushioned bedrolls if you’re bringing the family, but if there are just two of you in paradise, pack in a full-sized inflatable mattress; it fits perfectly on the large bunks and makes for a delightfully luxurious love nest.

Indulge

Each cabin site is exceptional in its own way, but we fell in love with No. 5, accessible only by a 1⁄2-mile hike and wholly worth the easy walk. Perched on a rocky outcropping that provides awe-inspiring views of the lake and stars above, this place begs for a pair to snuggle up outside in sleeping bags and while away the hours after sunset sipping wine and waxing philosophic about the world, which for the moment, feels light years away. No matter which cabin you select, you’ll have access to Harlow Lake, so bring fishing poles. Don’t forget hiking boots to check out the 20 miles of trails, and if you come during the warm season, rent a kayak from nearby Northern Michigan University to explore the nearby Lake Superior shoreline.

The Bellaire Bed and Breakfast

Imagine

In a charming riverside village, at the end of a long, tree-lined drive, perches an impeccably kept lemon-yellow farmhouse and carriage house. Inside, your every wish is granted: Hosts welcome you with wine in the library at check-in. Homemade cookies magically appear at your bedside at night. Complimentary snacks and beverages are available around the clock. Before bedtime, sinfully soft sheets are turned down and pillows are plumped. And breakfast? Breakfast is a culinary bounty where raspberry-almond stuffed French toast is just the beginning.

Indulge

Though each room here is a study in anticipating a guest’s every need and, as such, renders leaving during your stay unnecessary, try. In summer, you can roam the B&B’s extensive and inspiring gardens. Guests in the Eastlake room have access to a private second story porch that overlooks the grounds, and private open-air massages can be arranged. Any time of year, a short stroll brings you to the village main street. Doll up for dinner at Lulu’s Bistro, stop in to Short’s Brewery for live music and unforgettable ale, or simply slip into North Perk coffee shop to pick up a bottle of wine and some paperbacks … to take back to your room, of course.

The Inn at Bay Harbor

Imagine

If you’ve ever longed to live in another era, one where fashionable ladies and gents flocked to elegant inns by the shore for a season of luxury and leisure, pack your parasol for the Inn at Bay Harbor. The vibe here is refined but relaxed: the beach is outside the backdoor—just beyond the pool and giant chess set. The master suites, cast in crisp whites and soothing blues and greens, and outfitted with cloud-soft duvets and bathrobes, recall sumptuous summer cottages.

Indulge

Take afternoon tea in the Adirondack rockers on your balcony. Dine on the terrace at sunset or enjoy the classic cuisine inside ruby-walled Sagamore’s. Settle into a wingback chair in the stately lounge, Cognac in hand, as the moonlight glows above Lake Michigan. If it’s your anniversary, honeymoon or other special occasion, let the front desk know. At evening’s end your room will be readied for romance: rose petals scattered across the bed and into a steaming, candlelit bath—either place perfect for sipping champagne as you dip strawberrie into dishes of chilled chocolate, whipped cream and brown sugar. Make the romance last: Sign up for a couples massage lesson—80 minutes of inspiring hands-on instruction in a private suite inside the inn’s in-house spa.
