G.T.’s Rich History Featured in Glimpses

In the engaging Glimpses of Grand Traverse Past: Reflections on a Local History, author Richard Fidler uses historic photographs and thoughtful essays to examine Grand Traverse’s rich history. The book is not a heavy, all-encompassing tome; instead, it celebrates the region through the lens of everyday life, with writings on topics like why Front Street isn’t right on the bay, or how T.C.’s first minor league baseball team came to town.

“Rather than concentrating on great people and the events they catalyzed, I would focus on the lives of workers, housewives, grandparents and children who lived the past and had to cope with the poverty, lack of recognition, prejudice and the omnipresent dirt of existence so that they and their families might survive,” Fidler writes.

Published by the Grand Traverse Pioneer and Historical Society, Glimpses is available for $17.95 at Grand Traverse Heritage Center and Horizon Books in Traverse City, and Brilliant Books in Suttons Bay.
